Early Life
Mary kom was born on 1st march, 1983 in a small village Moirang Lamkhai in Manipur, Eastern India. Mary Kom’s parents were small farmers and worked under a landlord on small patch of land in jhum field. She has one brother and one sister younger than her.From a very early age, Mary Kom was interested in athletics and took part in many sports activities at school level. She was the responsible girl and helped her parents in daily chores.
She was more interested in boxing rather than studying. When she failed her matriculation exam, she didn’t reappeared and started focusing more on boxing.
Her training for boxing was hard at such a young age. She belonged to a small village and there was no training Centre. Therefore, she used to travel long distances from her village to Imphal under the guidance of her first coach K. Kosana Meitei.
Struggle
Mary Kom’s struggle is remarkable and inspires many young athletes and other sports personalities to pursue their dreams. She had faced many hurdles to achieve her goals. The only thing she had was her passion for boxing. This passion was shining in her eyes after Dingko Singh won a gold medal in Asian Games.Initially, Mary’s parents hadn’t supported in her boxing career. Her father came to know about her boxing competition winning through newspaper. He denied her to pursue boxing as a career. He was more concerned about her marriage and didn’t want Mary to hurt herself during boxing matches. Since those matches could bring bruises on her face and could damage her face.
Instead of all these difficulties, she bravely overcome all the obstacles and stood against them.
After her marriage, she gave birth to twin boys. She also struggled for a job but no one offered her appropriate job. After her marriage, no one hoped for the continuation of her boxing career. But out of all odds, she managed to resume her boxing training and reached at the position where she left.
After that, she won many awards and matches. Mary showed the world, hidden potential of women and their strong will power and dedication.
Achievements
Mary Kom’s career started in 2000, when she won best boxer award at the Women’s Boxing Championship in Manipur. She is a nifty sports personality who took five times National Championship (2000 to 2005) in her hands.In 2008, she participated in Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in India and won silver medal in it.
Even in Asian Indoor Games held at Vietnam in 2009, she adored herself with a gold medal.
AIBA World Boxing Championship are amateur boxing competitions organized by international boxing association. Mary won gold medal in AIBA world boxing championship in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010, thus made India proud by her unique talent.
Mary Kom was honored by Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in 2010 and 2013, respectively.
In Asian Games 2014, she won gold medal and showed the world that no obstruction is bigger than your desire to win.
Conclusion
Path to success is not easy and so was the case with Mary Kom. But who follow their dreams move ahead of others. Instead of many obstacles, she kept on moving and made her country, India proud.Mary Kom focused on her early life struggle in her auto-biography named ‘Unbreakable’. Inspired by her struggle and dedication, a biopic was also released on her life in which Priyanka Chopra played her role.
Mary Kom proved to our society that if you give fair chances to girls even they can excel in their interested field. In India, there is need to encourage of sport’s personalities , which will help to raise new talents.
Mary fought out of all the odds and today she is one of the famous personality of India.
